Pulling Your Pelvic Floor Muscles
The pelvic floor muscles support vital organs such as the bladder and colon. If these organs are not fully supported, you may experience difficulties with daily functions related to bladder and bowel movements, the latter of which can increase problems relating to hemorrhoids.
Because pelvic floor muscles can be consciously controlled, they can also be trained. There are many different, typical day to day things which can cause weakening or stretching of these muscles. To locate which muscles you need to train, sit or lie down on your back with the muscles of your thighs, buttocks, and stomach relaxed. Squeeze your muscles as if you are trying not to pass gas. Try not to squeeze the muscles in your buttocks. Next, when sitting on the toilet, allow a stream of urine to start and then use your pelvic floor muscles to stop the flow. Do this once or twice to determine which muscles you need to train, but do not do this often as it can inhibit the ability of your bladder to empty correctly.
A strong pelvic floor will provide you with much relief from hemorrhoid discomfort. Pulling your pelvic floor muscles several times a day, greatly reduces the pain of hemorrhoids. Focus on your pelvic floor muscles and lift and pull. This is called pulling and you should slowly start doing pulling repetitions throughout the day, building your pelvic floor strength. Pulling should be done a few seconds at a time and up to 50 to 100 repetitions a day.
Remember to engage your pelvic floor muscles when experiencing acute hemorrhoid pain and always after a bowel movement.
Good Posture
Maintaining good posture is vital in all aspects of your life, including, believe it or not, the ability to properly have bowel movements. Notice how correcting your posture will give you space for your abdominals to work. It will also take the pressure off the hemorrhoids. Remember to check and correct your posture both standing and sitting throughout the day.
Correct Posture for Bowel Movement
In ancient times our ancestors used to squat when they needed to move their bowels. When you "sit" as you were likely taught, you are compressing your colon, making the movement of the stool through your system more difficult. Try to sit in a manner where your thighs and your core are parallel. Lean forward while on the toilet so your knees meet your shoulders (as they would be in a deep squat). This allows for more natural movement of the stool out of your body, thus reducing the need to strain and potentially develop hemorrhoids.
Spending a long time just sitting on the toilet waiting for a bowel movement will not make it happen. On the contrary, you may spend several minutes straining to go and only end up developing a painful hemorrhoid. When you feel the urge to go, go; don’t wait, and remember to keep it short. Aim sitting on the toilet for maximum 15 - 30 seconds or so for bowel movement, no longer!
Healthy Lifestyle
Provide your body with a balanced selection of nutritious and unprocessed foods. Adjust your water consumption to match the weather, level of physical activity and your size. Be active! Move your body and find a way to exercise that you enjoy. Walking does wonders to ease constipation.
